Welcome!

Hey,"Lets Be Friends" is done by two student's, Nashwah and Tyeisha, in the eight grade humanities year, at University Neighborhood Middle school! It has been a great year for both Nashwah and Tyeisha although at times Mr. Locker has been hard on them. They even at times wanted to tell him a thing or two, but have learned it was done in their best interest. Pushing them to their true level has really given them the strength and courage they have today. As you read and hopefully enjoy their blog, you'll see how they have grown in humanities this year!!

The writing life of Tyeisha Kearsley

I never use to write because I never knew what to write about, until my Communication Arts teacher Ms.Shah told me to write what was in my head, and so I did it. At first it didn't make sence what I was writting, but she said that it was okay, it was just a free write. Everytime I write free writes, I got a little better at writing all together. Now that I know how to write a little, I just love to do it. Now that I love to write, I write poems all the time and I am really good at it too. Sometimes when I write poems, I don't think that they are good, but when I let poeple read them, they say that it is very good. When poeple tell me that I am a good writer and that my poems are very good, I just want to write more. When I get stuck and don't know what to write about,so I read other poeple poems it give me ideas to write about, then I would
know what to write about. I will now take my newly acquired writing skills to high school and see how far it will take me from there.
Also so other ways I leaned how to is,if I am writting from a passage and I don't know know a way to write it Mr.Locker thought me how to chunck.Chuncking is when I am writting from a passage all I have to do is stop at the end of the a paragraph take out the main idea and put it in your own words so I can understand it better then the way it was before. So the next time you read the passage I will understand it better than I did the first time.So I will also take this to high school and see how far it will take as well.

The reading life of Tyiesha Kearsley

The whole time when I was in school, I can't remember the first time I every picked up a book until I got to the 8th grade. When I first started the 8th grade, I did not want to read but once I got to Mr.Locker's class, I had to read. There was no ifs, ands, or buts about it. In the beginning of the year Mr.Locker had a goal for the 8th graders. We had to read at least 50 books by the end of the school year in order to pass the class. When I heard that, I was scared. I was scared because I didn't know I could read that much books in a year. But to tell you the truth, I didn't read all the time because I was too tried to read, but if it is a good book like HomeBoyz and A Child Called "It",I would stay up all night to read the book. Some of the books that I read, I really don't understand them. But one way that made me understand what I am reading is, I have to write down what is going on in the book. Another way is to stop at the end of a paragraph and talk to myself and find out what is the main idea of that paragraph. The person that thought me to do that is Mr.Locker.

why did people come to america in the 1600?

Why do people come to America?
Um... that's a very good question, why do people come to America?
Well People come to America for a few reasons, two of these resons is economic and educational opportunity. The new comers believe they can get a better education for their children in the United States of America. Many escape and came to the new land because of religious persecution. Some call this push and pull factors! However, when these eager new comers get to the new land, they were very surprised to see the streets weren't really paved with gold. They arrived at Ellis Island and had to undergo riggorous blood testing to make sure that they were healthy enought to begin their new life in America. After they get used to the new environment, they began to see the many hardships in America. They lived in small cramped tennament homes with small childern and many unwelcome guests (roches, rats, flies, ect.) .They worked long hard hours in factories, or picking cotton with little pay and at times had little to eat. Besides the hardship, the immigrants did help our country in many ways and made the golden land more diverse.

Scribble,Scrabble!

In my senior year here at UNMS, my writing and my reading styles have certaily changed. My writing was unfortunately a mess and I never kept on one subject for too long. My conclusion was too short and end abruptly most of the time. My cousin karien used to revise my writing, looking out for spelling, puncution, grammatical errors and mistakes in general. She always said you Nashwah really need to learn how to write, but come on... who really wants to write? Even though writing can better help you express your feelings and emotions, it wasn't my best area to work with. Once I walked in to hummaities class in september 2009, I immediately knew it was going to be another ball game! In eight grade Ilearned how to use transition words and how to attract my audience. I even wrote a well organized pearsonal letter to my cusin karien, expressing to her how I've changed over the course of the year! She was very impressed at how well eight grade had turned my writing and reading styles around!

Our Top Five Favorite Books

1. Our number one favorite book is " A Child Called It" by Dave Pelzer. This book is about a boy named Dave (hint-the author) Dave went threw a triumph of pain and sorow, his mother not only abused him physicaly but mentaly. They have some scenes in this book that not only makes you appreciate the life you have now, but makes you wanna breack down and cry. I remember I was on my way to Brooklyn on the train and I was with my aunt, my cuzin and step sister. To pass the time away I decided to read my book, and one scence in the book where Dave's mother locked him in a bathroom full of chemicals. I personally know that when I clean my brother's room with chemicals, and the door is open it start's to burn my eyes. At that moment on the train, I just immediately started to ball out and cry. Not only did I catch everyone's attention, I even heard a few comments. I didn't really mind them though, the book really touched my heart and that's why I made it my number one choice!
2. Our second choice is "Dancing Naked" by Shelly Hrdlitschka. This book is about a girl named Kia. Kia is a pregnant teenager in her junior year in school. A sudden unexpeacted pregnancy changes everything and with the support of her friends & family, kia gets through this trying time in her life. I like this book because it relates to alot of girls our age that are under the pressure of haveing sex, are actually having it and getting pregnant. This book is funny, witty, thrilling and some suprises came with it as well.
3. Our third favorite book is "November Blues" by Sharon M.Draper. At first I didn't really want to read this book. I thought it was gonna be like the "Battle of Jericho," which I didn't really enjoy that much. However, "November Blues" is the most exciting book ever I had the joy of reading! I was very intimidated when I saw the size of the book, but when I finally started readinq it, I didn't wanna stop reading. Before I knew it, I was done! This one, just like "Dancing Naked," is about an urban teenager's pregnancy. I can truly say that this book rocks! it draws you in, captures your attention, until you've read it cover to cover. It is definitely an eye snatcher, especially the part when her dead boyfriend's parents try to take the baby... ooops, I said too much already! It's a point blank awesome book!
4. Our fourth favorite book is "Home Boyz" by Alan Lawrence Sitomer. This book is a thrillagy of neighborhood drive- by, which killed a young gang banger[blood] baby sister. After the terefic accident, Tim wants full revenge. When he got arrested and had to do community service with a trouble teen, it opened up his eyes to a whole new lite!

5. Our fifth and final favorite book is "Define Normal" by Julie Anne Peters. Julie captures the heart and soul of not only todays teenagers, but todays society and social outlook on America's stereo types. The author sends her message through the characters, Jasmin and Antonia. Jasmin is a punk rocker and Antonia is what we claim as normal. When Antonia gets into peer councelling, things get ruff and they found out not everthing is as it seems on the outside.
